Bahnchen: Rolling Stock

For Bahnchen, I wanted a rake of skips to run behind the contractor’s loco.

I got some skips from the 009 Society stall and converted them to 6.5mm gauge.

These 009 skips were second hand. They’re rather nice.
To convert them to 6.5mm gauge I just pushed the wheels closer together.
The wagons were connected with short chains. I removed these.
Then I added Greenwich coupling loops to one end. The wagons already have a ‘coupling hook’ on them.
To create loads, I lined the wagons with cling film, added 3mm cork granules and covered them in ballast glue.

The skips are quite light but run OK.

  1. I added weight to mine by lining the skip buckets with thin lead. Made a big difference. There are some pictures on page 2 of the Cement Works album on mu Flickr site.

      • I first of all used some very thin lead sheet I got from a fishing tackle shop. Then I discovered I could hammer some thicker sheet until it was really thin. My little Kerr Stuart Wren just about manages six skips although the wheels do spin occasionally!
