Coffee Stirrer Wagons

Coffee stirrers are a really useful modelling material.

Andy Greenslade wrote a nice article about using them to make narrow gauge wagons in Going Minimum Gauge.

I thought I’d give it a go… Click on an image for a larger version

A big pack of coffee stirrers from Hobbycraft. Cheaper than an expensive coffee 🙂
Cut to size: 8 pieces for the wagon surface, 2 longer pieces for solebars, 2 pieces for headstocks.
Glue together with superglue.
Add solebars, headstocks and a OO9 chassis
Some holes to add detail.
Add a few rusty bolt heads and stain the wood.
The completed wagon.

I was rather pleased with this, especially considering it was a first attempt.

I like the surface of the flat wagon but I’m not sure about the wooden headstocks and solebars.

Could I make one with a metal chassis ? Click on an image for a larger version

A fake chassis was made from plasticard and plastic section.
A OO9 chassis fits inside.
Paint with primer and black paint.
Paint with rust colour and glue on the wood.
Stain the wood…
… job done.

This wagon definitely gets my vote. I like the metal frame combined with the rough wooden top.

I think I might make some more 🙂

  1. That is a great looking wagon Steve! Buying the coffee stirrers in bulk seems the most economic way to get a supply in as well. Just imagine how much that wagon would have cost in coffees if you had to buy one for each stirrer that you needed! Mind you, at least you would have the satisfaction of several coffee flavoured drinks as well as the wagon!
