Concrete Hard Standing

In another small step forward, I’ve added some concrete hard standing both inside and outside the packing shed.

The base is made from balsa wood, which was scored lengthways to represent tamping marks before being painted to resemble concrete.

For the finish, I used Mig Ammo Acrylic Concrete Texture, although with a couple of modifications.

  • First, I felt the original colour was a little too dark, so I lightened it by mixing in some light grey acrylic paint until I achieved a shade that looked right to my eye.
  • The texture itself was quite coarse, even for 16mm/ft scale. Once it had fully dried, I gently sanded the surface to create a smoother, more realistic finish.

I was very pleased with the Mig Ammo Wall Whitewashing product I used to render the building previously—it produced an excellent result and was well worth the investment.

The Concrete Texture, however, left me a little less convinced. In hindsight, I suspect I could have achieved a very similar effect using a suitably coloured paint and a bit of weathering.

Still, experimentation is all part of the hobby, and every project teaches you something new. That’s certainly the case here!
