HOf Narrow Gauge Logging Train

These cute 009 bolster wagons were sitting on a second hand stand looking lost and lonely.

I couldn’t resist, they had to be converted to HOf to run on Bahnchen.

Lots of fettling was required to get them running properly.

  • The original couplings fouled on the backs of the wheels as they went round the sharp curves.
    • I used Greenwich coupling loops instead.
  • The logs rolled between the stanchions causing the bolsters to derail.
    • The logs were ‘chocked’ in place with some pieces of matchstick.
  • The loco struggled to pull the train. It’s fun to see an Egger loco spinning it’s wheels ๐Ÿ™‚ but it had to be fixed.
    • Adding four small pieces of lead under the fake toolbox was the solution.

After all this, it brought a smile to my face to see the lumber wagons running around the layout.

This project reminded me how much faffing around needs to be done to get ‘top heavy’ 009 stock to run around 6.5mm gauge 6cm radius curves.

I do enjoy playing around with HOf, perhaps a layout with gentler curves would be a better ideaโ€ฆ

  1. Hi Steve,

Given what you went through to get this all to work, I think it can be well summed up by The Art of the Impossible! Nicely done Sir!
