In the model railway community it’s often said that a layout is never finished.
There’s probably something in this. You can always tinker about, add another detail…
When I make a layout I reach a point where I think: ‘I’ve done everything I want to do’.
And I’ve reached that point with Boxomise.

I could fill the space available with ‘cameos’ and ‘animations’, but I don’t want to.

I really like the rather quiet, rural atmosphere of the layout.
Provincial, isolated, a place where nothing much really happens.

I wanted to create a general carrier that’s struggling to make money and I feel I’ve done that.
Yes, Boxomise is ‘finished’.
It’s time to move on to other things.
I too don’t agree with saying ‘a layout is never finished’. I guess some of those large, permanent set-ups in an attic or a basement or a shed can be continually tinkered with and added to forever. But, I feel, the sort of micro layouts we build reach a stage where we know when stop or else it becomes over-cluttered.

Knowing when to stop can be the difference between a successful layout and a cluttered mess. Too many cameos can spoil the atmosphere, especially when the setting is a rural backwater where nothing much happens and what does happen does so without fuss or fanfare. I think you’ve got the balance about right. David Gander’s Green End was an excellent study of such a scene.

Agree with all that has been said. Doesn’t stop you coming back at a later date to add things but when you feel it’s done it’s done! In this case it is also done very well!

Hi Woody,
Thank you!
I will live with it for a while, but I’ll probably not be able to resist a few little tweeks !

It’s a great looking layout. Sometimes less is more, and while you may find the odd detail that is worth adding, there is no point in adding for the sake of it.

Hi Michael,
Thanks!
Yes I suspect I will go back and add the odd little thing… when I see a possibility.
I don’t think there will be a parade or a village fete though 🙂
