Narrow Gauge Tank Wagon

Work continues on building wagons for my 16mm scale narrow gauge shunting puzzle.

I decided that a tank wagon would be a useful addition to the fleet.

It turned out to be a fairly straightforward build…. Click on a photo for a bigger image.

The main components are a resin-cast tank and a brass tap, purchased from Swift Sixteen. They are very nice, crisp mouldings.

First, the tank was painted to represent galvanised steel. Historically, industrial and agricultural water tanks were often made from galvanised steel, so this felt like a sensible choice.

The finish was achieved by dabbing various shades of grey using a sponge. It’s an easy technique — and very forgiving, as you can always dab on more grey if it doesn’t look quite right.

Finally, I made a flat wagon chassis (identical to the one I built earlier) and fixed the tank to it.

Simples!

Feeling rather pleased with myself, I shared a photo with my friend Dave — who promptly sent back a picture of a very similar tank wagon he’d made.

It seems there are quite a few of these out there after all 🙂
