Finally I have added the wheels to the Phil Sharples SM32 Estate Loco kit and given it a test run.
Here’s the chassis running under the control of a Loco Remote.
The slow running is very good.
When pulling wagons there’s lots of wheel slip, especially if the rail joints are uneven.
I’ll need to add some weight to this!
This may not feel like a big step to an experienced 16mm scale modeller.
However, this is the first chassis I’ve built from a kit and I’m pleased to see it runs π
Some ‘tweaking’ is needed to get it to haul wagons reliably but that’s part of the fun, isn’t it?
Yes Steve, more weight will help with traction, & 4 wheel drive also helps. I always feel the fun part is the added details & weathering.
Have fun, Dave Pollard

Hi Dave
I am pleased you’ve seen it running. 2WD only a the moment – so I’m hoping the lead will make a difference!
Yes, I’m looking forward to painting and assembling this. I brought a rattle can of green paint yesterday. Locos look good in green π
All the best
Steve

For weight I find wheel balancing weights (they come ready to stick on) are quite good for adding to these models. I bought a set of these 5g ones and just keep adding one at a time until I’m happy with the traction and balance: https://amzn.to/4oKr1XX

Hi Mark, Thank you, I hadn’t thought of those. They are small and already black = no painting required. Nice idea, I will buy some π
