Boxomise: My First CDU

Today was reserved for testing Boxomise to see if it ran properly.

It quickly became apparent that the point motors weren’t working reliably. They worked intermittently. To make matters worse it was happening with all the point motors and with two different transformers.

I prodded around underneath the layout for about an hour, but nothing made the motors work.

A change of scene was needed. I headed over to the Ely exhibition.

My favourite layout of the exhibition was Grazellar Bahn, in HOe by Peter Johnston.

On the Layouts4U stand I saw some Capacitor Discharge Units. I’ve never tried one – could this be the solution? I brought one and a rather nice illuminated uncoupler too.

Back at home the CDU was quickly fitted to the layout. It was small enough to fit under my 20mm high baseboard frame and easy to wire up. Two wires in, two wires out !

I’m pleased to say, it’s solved the problem.

My SEEP motors are switching with a resounding ‘thump’ now 🙂
